Argumentative Essay.

The production and sale of cigarettes should be made illegal

Today, citizens are bombarded with abundant of campaigns that persuade people to stop smoking. The production and sale of cigarettes not only has negative impact on human health, it can even cause death. Cigarettes contains over 4,000 chemicals, that is cancer-causing and toxins. Ingredients in the cigarettes affect everything from the internal organs to the efficiency of the immune system. This are the main reasons why the production and sale of cigarettes must be prohibited.

Many people do not understand how dangerous smoking is, and people who smoke do not even recognize how serious problems can cause. People smoke because they say it makes them feel good, but the real fact is, nicotine in the bloodstream acts to make the smoker calm. Most of the chemical inhaled in cigarette smoke stays in the lungs. The more you inhale, the better it feels but the greater damage to your lungs. In other words, it is slowly killing you at the same time.

In this century, teenagers are the most affected population. Most of them tried their first tobacco in a young age and it felt great. They tend to continue as they feel it did not affect any parts of their body at the moment. They totally don’t understand the effect of smoking. Teenagers smoke just to have fun, and it’s probably cool to them among their peers. They will also tend to hide their smoking habits from their parents, or they will be in trouble. All these are negative doings. It is bad for their growing stages.

There are people who do not agree with the idea of making the production and sale of cigarettes to be illegal. Opponents of the idea claim that every person has the right to buy and smoke cigarettes because it is part of freedom. They do not think of how cigarettes will harm many people, even those that are walking distance away, who inhale the smoke they exhaled. Supporters of the idea that the production and sale of cigarettes should be made illegal are very persuasive. Firstly, parents will not want their children to smoke, because they will always want the best for their kids. Smoking is a very bad example for kids and youth because when they see adults smoking everywhere it begins to seen to them that it is normal and they would probably start to imitate this kind of behavior. All these will be harmful to them.

In conclusion, the production and sale of cigarettes should be made illegal as soon as possible. There are no benefits in smoking at all. Many people are already dead because of cigarettes, and it’s saddening. People should be more responsible for their health and health of their loved ones before it’s too late.

4th Class, 5th of March.

Today, Miss Nilam walked in the class with a roll of mahjong paper and a bag of marker pen. We were wondering what are those for. So turn out, we were asked to do a short presentation on how to build the most luxurious 5-star hotel in Malaysia. We were divided in our own groups, mainly 3 to 5 people. But ours was a little special, we had 7 people in our group. Haha. Because those that came in late to class came and join our group.
Ms Nilam gave each group two piece of mahjong paper and two marker pen. Later on, she gave us a paper on the requirements and details that are needed for the hotel. The budget was initially RM50million, then she later raise it to RM100million because many students complain that it wasn’t enough. Our task was to build the most luxurious 5-star hotel in Malaysia with a RM100million, think of a name, location and explain on the design.
We were very excited in this activity, because we never really thought of building a hotel before. After a whole lot of discussion with different opinions, we decided that our hotel will be named Penell, is a combination of sea turtle ( Penyu ) and our restaurant shaped seashell. Our hotel will be built by the beach, so that customers could enjoy a great view and we also decided to have a restaurant under the sea. It is extended from the lower ground of the hotel into the sea, with a seashell shape. So that customers could have a different kind of experience while dinning in the restaurant. Besides that, we provide everything that is required to make our customers happy and feeling satisfied for staying in our hotel.
We had a great experience during this class. Learnt so many new things and actually thought about things we never thought before. Thanks Miss Nilam for organizing this lesson for us. Really appreciate.

Thank you =)

Third Class, 26th of February.

Today, is just an ordinary day, having our English class with Miss Nilam. Our topic today was Work and Fun. There was many question asked by miss Nilam in class, and many different answers and opinion. Later on, we were told to form a group of 3 – 4 members to chart out how are we going to live in KL with a salary of RM2500 only. And also to prove is this possible?

We made it possible. RM2500 is enough for a person to live in KL.  The list of things goes like this :-
-          Room rental, RM400
-          Public Transport, RM60
-          Entertainment, RM400
-          Daily use (eg. Shampoo, toothpaste ), RM100
-          Pet, RM10
-          Boyfriend, RM200
-          Fixed Deposit, RM250
-          Bills, RM150
-          Emergency money, RM250.
-          Food, RM600
-          Insurance, RM80.

Besides that, we would like to talk about something different today. There are so many activities we do in our daily life. Some activities is a waste of time and some could be paid for someone else to do it for us. But it also depends on if there’s extra money for this. We discussed about this, and decided we would pay someone to do our house chores for us. A part time maid perhaps. The reason is because it will save us so much time and could keep the house clean at the same time. Maids do their jobs better than we do. Haha. We get lazy sometimes and ignore house chores, and sometimes come up with a hundred of excuses not to do house chores. So, a part time maid who will come twice or thrice a week would be the best person to pay to do our activity!

That’s all for today.
Thanks for reading.

Second Class, 19th of February.

Today, we had our first English class after a week of Chinese New Year holiday, with our lovely lecturer, Miss Nilam. Today's class was a little bit different and is more interesting compared to the previous class. The title for today's class is Language. Miss Nilam taught us a couple of new things that we never knew before. Example, the total number of recognized language in the world. The total recognized language in the world is around 7,000 different type of languages.  All of us did not expect such many languages in the world, some are even not found or recognized yet.

So today we were also told to write about language death. We actually do not know the real meaning of language death. But after doing some research, we figured it out. Language death means an extinction of a language, explained by linguistics. If a language is rarely spoken or used, it will slowly be forgotten and disappears. Those are called language death.

So, what is the reason that will cause language death? Nowadays, many of us uses English to communicate with each other, also use in education. It has became an international language. Due to this situation, many parents now set English as a first language for their children right from the moment they are born and learns how to talk. They neglected their mother language thereby losing their identity. Some even warn their parents not to speak other languages to their children besides English. Every parents do want the best for their child, of course they would like them to speak fluent English when they grow up and have confidence when they are communicating in English with others, but this is the wrong way of educating them. These are the reasons that causes language death. The child will grow up not knowing what is his/her heritage language for his/her race.

We can't let this go on and we have solutions to this. There are many ways of preserving a language. Firstly, be proud of your mother tongue. Shouldn't be shy while communicating with it and build up the confident in your own language. Besides that, government should make it a must to study the language of the country or race. Like how our country Malaysia is doing. For all Malaysian, no matter your race, is a must to learn Bahasa Melayu from primary school all the way to university. This will assure that we will be able to write, speak, understand and listen to our official language of the country. This will definitely avoid language death.

Finally, should we encourage saving all languages or should we be selective? From my opinion, we should save all the languages around the world. Because, it is actually giving a chance to our new generation or someone who are interested in learning a different language. All the languages around the world are wonderful, we should spread it to our next generation and keep it going.

First class, 5th February.

Today, on the 5th of February, we started our first English 1 class with Miss Nilam, a pretty and young lecturer. But firstly, we will briefly introduce ourselves, as the author of this blog. We are running this blog as partners, both females. Andrea Loo and Khor Zhu Zheng. We just completed our Foundation In Commerce in Segi University and pursuing our degree now in Accounting and Finance by Teesside University ( BAAF ). We grow up in a different language educated family. Me, as Andrea typing here, I grew up in an English educated family while Zhu Zheng grew up in a mandarin educated family. We are always excited about English classes as we will learn new vocabulary every time. During our first class today, we did not expect much. We were thinking it would be like the other classes like how the lecturer come in and introduce themselves and start talking about how many assignments we will have in this semester, how many marks will it occupy in our final exams and so on. Miss Nilam was different, she came in, make some jokes and get us to introduce ourselves so that she could know us better and remember our names easier I guess. *giggles*. Later on, she talks about getting a textbook and doing an assignment, which was creating a blog and writing about different opinions every week.

We would like to write about what are we expecting from this English 1 class that we will be attending for 3 months. From our discussion, firstly we would like to improve our communication skills. We would like to communicate more in a good English with other people. I ( Andrea ) communicate in English with my family since young, as my parents don't know mandarin. Even though I do speak everyday, my mum still says that my English is bad and I don't know many words. As for Zhu Zheng, she rarely communicate in English because the main language for her and her family is in mandarin. She also speaks mandarin with all her friends. So in this case, we would really like to improve our communication skills and get to know more new words.

Secondly, we would like to improve our writing skills. We wish Miss Nilam will teach us from the base for a good writing and to produce a quality essay/passage. We would love to learn more about proper use of grammar, and using words that could impress readers in our passage.

Thirdly, we want to improve our reading skills and make it as a habit to be reading. Both of us doesn't like to read at all, no matter in what language. We would like to start reading short novels or newspaper and others, but most importantly, we want to learn to understand what we are reading. To accomplish all these, guess we need a little push from our lecturer, we wish she will help us achieve this at the end of the semester.

That's all for today. Hope you enjoy reading this!
Thanks
